ACCEDERA - Improving the accuracy of personal RF measurements and characterisation of exposure levels in different environments across different countries
Project Abstract
Mobile phone base stations and handsets, wireless local area networks (WLAN), and radio/television signals are typical examples of sources of radiofrequency electromagnetic fields. The aim of this study is to gain better knowledge of the exposure of the general population to such radiofrequency electromagnetic fields. This will be done by developing and applying a novel body-worn distributed radiofrequency exposure meter to conduct indoor and outdoor measurements in five different countries (France, Belgium, The Netherlands, Spain and Switzerland).
The novel device is expected to achieve considerably higher sensitivity levels than the already existing personal exposure assessment methods with which it will be compared. In each country, repeated measurements will be conducted in 80 different microenvironments in urban, suburban and rural areas, for example residential areas, town centres, business areas, trains, buses, subway, railway stations and shopping centres. In order to achieve comparability of the findings, a standardized measurement protocol will be applied in all countries. The results will allow quantifying radiofrequency exposure contributions from specific microenvironments, and evaluating the impact of policies related to electromagnetic field exposure of the population in those five countries.
