Schisto Elimination - Building community health resilience and alleviating poverty through multi-sectoral cooperation for elimination of schistosomiasis in Cambodia and Lao People’s Democratic Republic
Project Abstract
Cambodia and Lao PDR have secured funding from the Global Development Fund (China) and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) to eliminate Schistosoma mekongi. Funding is through the World Health Organization (WHO), and Swiss TPH together with the National Institute of Parasitic Diseases (NIPD) in Shanghai provide technical assistance to Lao PRD and Cambodia in the areas of training, monitoring and evaluation of schistosomiasis elimination.
The 24-month project has five targets. Target 1: Evidence-informed multisectoral actions are well coordinated across sectors; target 2: Delivery of NTD interventions is enhanced; Target 3: Communities are empowered and health literary strengthened through effective risk communication; target 4: Effective and sustained surveillance and operational research are designed to measure impacts and generate evidence of success; and target 5: All activities under the Project are implemented according to the proposal.
Key activities proposed to achieve the targets are implementation of mass drug administration, improvement of water supply, sanitation and hygiene facilities in all health centres and primary schools in the affected area, enhanced health education, training for knowledge and skill transfer, monitoring and evaluation, and operational researches, among others.
