POCC - Resilience to climate change and natural hazards in Philippine jails
Project Abstract
The Philippines, one of the world's most disaster-prone countries, frequently faces environmental and climate disasters such as heat waves, floods, droughts, typhoons, landslides, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions, with climate change worsening these extreme events. Prisons and jails in the country are particularly vulnerable, raising significant protection and health concerns for detainees. In response, the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), in collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), has integrated climate risk considerations into their operations. Jail susceptibility maps and risks assessments have allow to implement tailored recommendations enhancing jail resilience.
Swiss TPH is assisting the ICRC and BJMP in refining the risk assessment approach by integrating health protection issues more thoroughly, leading to concrete measures that enhance planning, preparedness, mitigation, response, and recovery efforts to better safeguard detainees from the health impacts of natural hazards.
