Effects of Climate Change on Health

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that approximately 250,000 deaths annually between 2030 and 2050 could be due to climate change  with vulnerable populations being the most affected. There is no more denying the various effects that climate change has and will have on health; it is becoming one of the biggest global health threats of this century. We know that increasing temperatures are associated with extreme weather events and with the spread of water and food-borne diseases, which all have an impact on health.

At Swiss TPH, we have been working on climate change and health for over ten years, for example with our research on air pollution and the effects of heat in Switzerland and abroad. Our scientists also monitor the spread of the tiger mosquito in Switzerland and establish risk profiles of sub-Saharan African communities affected by heavy flooding.

We want to be among the pioneers in Switzerland and worldwide when it comes to conducting research and making policy change. We need to continue to gain a better understanding of the factors that impact our health, and develop strategies and policies to adapt to and mitigate the harmful effects of climate change.

Public funds in this sphere are limited, and we depend on foundations and donors who want to use their potential and support us in opening up new and innovative fields of research. Please do contact us if you wish to support us in this mission.

Please note that donations to Swiss TPH are channelled through the R. Geigy Foundation, a foundation established to support the activities of Swiss TPH.
